When using personal devices to access IoT devices – including account information, payment
screens and other services for those devices – consumers should be aware of their surroundings.
Device screens should not be exposed to passersby and potential onlookers, especially when
entering log-in information or viewing sensitive account details.
Consumers should also strongly consider applying privacy filters to any personal device that is used
outside the secure confines of their homes. Available to buy where most IT supplies and
accessories are sold, privacy filters blacken out the angled view of onlookers to protect information
displayed on the screen.
The filters are available for laptops and mobile devices, and provide the added benefit of helping
protect screens against scratches and other damage.
Given the growing proliferation of IoT devices in our everyday lives, and the ease with which they
can be accessed on personal devices, the filters are increasingly considered a security best
practice for organizations and consumers.
Embracing IoT Security
Both enterprise customers and consumers will continue to embrace the IoT, but the inherent privacy
and security risks should be cause for concern. We all must be mindful that more needs to be done
to ensure the IoT is as equally worry free as it is life enhancing, especially as the IoT continues to
spread into sensitive areas such as home security and eventually into fully connected and driverless
vehicles.
