Obviously, the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) ushers in a new era of big data applications. For some examples: high-definition cameras for urban surveillance systems, multimedia-on-demand for hotel/KTV entertainment services, integrated electronic fare, message broadcasting and management services for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and even connecting home care and hospital medical platforms through a medical cloud to provide better services; all of these emerging applications are driving strong demand for storage systems. Actually, increasing storage capacity is not the only requirement for these intelligent systems. Taking the large-scale monitoring system for transportation, municipal and government as an example, the system can be subdivided into multiple regional DVR systems on remote sites as well as associating with a central management center. Due to the easy installation requirements and budget considerations, most regional DVR systems are directly adopted Storage Server solutions, which reduce implementation costs by integrating computing capability and storage units. In contrast, the External Disk Array system is a preferred choice for central data storage management because of the requirements for high availability and storage consolidation. Although there are already many suppliers that provide Storage Server and Disk Array systems, their products are still unable to fully meet the needs of intelligent systems. ● High Reliability Design In response to the large demand for enterprise IT applications, the parts procurement and system testing of Storage Servers generally follow commercial standards. However, high reliability and longevity of hardware are major focuses for each intelligent system. As multi-bay storage systems such as 2U12-bay or even 4U24-bay have been proposed, there are more problems that must be overcome, such as thermal issues and mechanical vibration and shock. ● Fault-tolerant Data Protection With increasingly large amounts of data in play, data integrity and data protection are becoming important for intelligent systems. Generally, the most cost-effective solution for a Storage Server which contains 2 to 4 hard disk drives is to adopt software RAID implementation, but when the number of HDDs is increased to 24 units or even up to 60 units by using an additional " # % " $ " # ! !
