The Multi Face Of DDOS Attacks
DIFFERENT DDOS PATTERNS THAT COULD DEVASTATE YOUR BUSINESS
by Jason Parms, Customer Service Manager, SSL2BUY Inc.
Over the last 12 years DDoS attacks have become a dark side of the IT landscape. Many of the
largest websites in the world have been already victims of Distributed Denial-of-Service attacks
(DDoS). In a DDoS attack, a single online service is targeted by multiple systems, where
multiple system sources make disable online services by overwhelming traffic and users cannot
access the targeted service. In the last ten years, the number of DDoS attacks increased
sharply.
For the first time in the spotlight
The first large-scale distributed attack (DDoS) launched in 1999. The target was the IRC server
of the University of Minnesota. There were 227 systems affected and the university server was
two days unavailable due to UDP packets that were originated from thousands of machines.
