● Something the user knows, such as a personal identification number, password or
pattern
● Something the user has, like an ATM card, phone or fob
● Something the user is (i.e. biometrics), such as a fingerprint, face impression or voice
2FA only takes a few minutes to set up and it doesn’t introduce significant user friction, so
there’s no excuse! Confirm that every single employee has enabled 2FA for all of their various
accounts.
3. Leverage password management tools for team sharing.
It’s common for some companies, especially small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), to
only have one login for an account the entire company uses. For instance, an entire marketing
team might share one Salesforce account, or a handful of customer service employees might
share one Zendesk login. This practice can save companies a lot of money, however by sharing
one login across dozens of people -- or worse yet, by saving that shared login information in an
insecure place or manner -- security gaps are created. Consider using a password management
tool like 1Password or LastPass to securely implement, store and manage passwords used by
multiple employees and/or teams. These products can provide frictionless login security and
better yet, they can seamlessly scale as your employee count grows.
Research shows that 90% of employee passwords are hackable within just 6 hours, and a
single, resulting data breach can cost SMBs an average of $38,000. Protect your business by
ensuring first and foremost that your employees understand the security risks poor passwords
and careless login procedures can introduce. By leveraging easy-to-use technologies such as
2FA and password management software, 2017 can be the year everyone in your company
undergoes a password audit and cumulatively strengthens the security of your business.
