2017 Black Hat Asia Keynotes:

Why We are Not Building a Defendable Internet: Thomas Dullien (aka Halvar Flake), renowned reverse engineer at Google
–     Thursday, March 30 at 9 AM

Thomas Dullien (aka Halvar Flake) began his work in reverse engineering and digital rights management in the mid-90s, pioneering early windows heap exploitation, patch diffing/bindiffing and various other reverse engineering techniques. He founded zynamics in 2004, a company focused on reverse engineering technologies, and continued to publish about reverse engineering, ROP gadget search, and knowledge management technologies. In 2011 zynamics was acquired by Google and he spent the next few years working on defensive technologies that leveraged hot buzzwords “big data” and “machine learning.” In summer 2015, Halvar received the lifetime achievement Pwnie and returned to Google in November 2016 after a year-long sabbatical.

In his presentation, Why We are Not Building a Defendable Internet, Halvar will explore how most defensive problems (unlike the more technical offensive side) are political and/or organizational in nature, and look at how individual motivations dictate the course. The talk will look at different players in IT security: CISOs, security product vendors, computer manufacturers, cyber insurances – and examine their economic incentive structures, their interplay, and reasons for defense failure.

The Seven Axioms of Security: Saumil Shah, founder and CEO of Net-Square
–     Friday, March 31 at 9 AM

Saumil Shah, founder and CEO of Net-Square, is an internationally recognized speaker and instructor on all things attack and defense. He has been the co-developer of the wildly successful “Exploit Laboratory” courses, taught all over the world, and has authored two books titled Web Hacking: Attacks and Defense and The Anti-Virus Book.

In his keynote address entitled, The Seven Axioms of Security, Saumil will cover how and why today’s attackers are winning – hint: the role of defense has historically been to react, then play catch-up. He will discuss seven axioms for implementing proactive defense strategy and measures for the future – concluding with a blueprint of the next evolution of proactive defense architecture.
